British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he commented. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
